Vermont Reading Road Trip

 Vermont Reading Road Trip

Our preschoolers have just embarked on a semester long reading and writing project. We will be recording how many books we read from now until June as well as what kinds of books (non-fiction v. fiction, counting books, alphabet books...) we read. As we record the number of books we read, we're going to "travel" around the perimeter of our Vermont map (hanging in the hallway). One book = one mile. There are 480 miles to travel. Can we make it around the state before June? Can we make it farther? WE NEED YOUR HELP! Yesterday, we sent home a paper for your child to record how many books they read at home. All they need to do is color in a number each time they read (someone reads to them) a book outside of school. When they have filled the paper (30 books), send the paper back, and we will add it to our tally and move the bus around the map. We'll send another page home each time they bring one in.

In addition to our classroom teachers reading books to the kids, we're inviting guest readers into the classroom to read. Ms. Rose was our first guest reader! We've also had Ms. Wise, Ms, Nancy, Grandma Joan, and our PT read to the kids. The kids have a goal to have every staff member read a book to our class. We also would love to have parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and/or older siblings read to us. Please let me know if you would like to read to the group sometime before June. We will do our best to work with your schedule. If reading just after drop-off or just before pick-up works best for you, we will make it work for us.

In addition to reading lots of books, our preschoolers are excited to become writers and illustrators themselves. We have just started working on our first book this week. Each student is writing and illustrating a counting book. Later this month, we will start working on a class alphabet book. You'll be able to check out our books on our writers' books case that will be coming soon.

We even had the opportunity to meet a local author and illustrator, Jason Chin.
