Montshire Museum: Sinking and Floating Ms. Rebecca, from the Montshire Museum, visited Westshire last Monday to teach the preschoolers and kindergartners about sinking and floating. They hypothesized which items would sink and which would float. They tested their hypotheses and made observations. They worked with their partners and discussed their observations and then tested to see if they could make a floating object sink or a sinking object float. After reporting their findings to their classmates, they did a second experiment. Starting with 3 floating objects that were shaped to resemble a boat, a raft, and a canoe, they predicted which object would hold the most pennies before sinking. They found out that there were multiple variables: number of pennies, position of pennies on the object, and whether they placed the pennies carefully or dropped the pennies from higher up. All in all, the students had a wonderful time experimenting together.

Math is EVERYWHERE!

Math is EVERYWHERE! Math is all around us, and our preschoolers are constantly discovering it in meaningful and engaging ways. Whether we are intentionally teaching math skills through games and hands-on activities, or children are noticing shapes, numbers, and patterns in their environment, math is woven into everything we do. Take a moment to watch this short video to see some of the ways preschoolers naturally interact with math:  Bing Videos .
